Epinomy - Harnessing the Power of Frappe Framework and ERPNext for Flexible Business Solutions

Discover how Applied Relevance's search for flexible, open-source business software led to the creation of Epinomy, built on Frappe Framework and ERPNext.

At Applied Relevance, our journey to Frappe Framework and ERPNext wasn't a straight path. It was born from frustration with existing solutions and a desire for something more flexible, more open, and more aligned with our values.

The Search Begins

Our quest began with a simple need: a better accounting system. We'd bounced from Quickbooks to Xero to Freshbooks, each move leaving us increasingly dissatisfied. We longed for a platform we could control, one that wouldn't nickel-and-dime us with upsells or trap us with restrictive terms of service.

Simultaneously, we were searching for a robust Backend-as-a-Service (BaaS) solution. We needed something that could handle the essentials: role-based security, content management, authentication, authorization, and database ORM. It seemed like a tall order.

A Foray into Manufacturing

Our search took an unexpected turn when we dipped our toes into the manufacturing space. Tasked with integrating a mid-tier ERP system (CostPoint, for those keeping score), we found ourselves in unfamiliar territory. Enterprise Resource Planning was a new world for us, and frankly, the term itself seemed like a misnomer for the complex beast we were dealing with.

The Azure Experiment

Being a Microsoft shop, we initially gravitated towards the Azure ecosystem. We built a prototype tablet application for inventory management using their low-code and no-code tools. It worked, but when it came time to price out deployment, we were in for a shock. A glorified to-do list was going to cost our client $2,000 per month. Needless to say, that implementation didn't make it past the prototype stage.

Enter Frappe and ERPNext

This experience piqued our interest in ERP software. Our research led us to two intriguing options: Odoo and ERPNext. We downloaded both.

Odoo seemed slicker and more polished, but it came with a catch: built-in upsells and a focus on obtaining license keys. It felt like we were trading one set of restrictions for another.

ERPNext, built on the Frappe Framework, was different. It was less flashy, sure, but it had a certain charm. The founder's strong advocacy for open-source software resonated with us. More importantly, Frappe Framework offered the general-purpose stack we'd been searching for all along.

Why We Chose Frappe

Several factors tipped the scales in Frappe's favor:

  1. Open Source Philosophy: Both Frappe (MIT license) and ERPNext (GPL license) aligned with our belief in open, transparent software.

  2. Flexibility: Frappe Framework allowed us to build custom applications while leveraging a robust ERP system.

  3. Community: The active, engaged community around Frappe and ERPNext promised ongoing support and collaboration.

  4. Control: We could host and manage our own instances, free from the whims of SaaS pricing models.

  5. Scalability: The framework could grow with us and our clients, from simple applications to complex, integrated systems.

Building Epinomy

With Frappe as our foundation, we set out to build Epinomy. We leveraged ERPNext's comprehensive feature set while developing custom tools to address specific business needs. The result is a flexible, powerful platform that combines the best of both worlds: a robust ERP system and tailored solutions for unique business challenges.
